Istanbul Medipol University Health Sciences and Technology Research Institute, which continued its works even in the pandemic, is now ready for all the scientists who want to do research internationally.

 

Istanbul Medipol University Regenerative and Restorative Medicine Research Center (REMER), which is among the prestigious research centres in the field of regenerative medicine in the world, has transformed into the Health Sciences and Technology Research Institute (Sağlık Bilim ve Teknolojileri Araştırma Enstitüsü (SABITA)) by enhancing its laboratory infrastructure and expanding the number of the researchers. Cancer Research Center, Drug Development Center, Bioengineering and Biotechnology Research Center, Neuroscience Research Center, Experimental Animal Unit and Genetic Diseases Diagnosis Center are operating under the roof of SABITA, which also includes REMER.

OZTURK: RESEARCH PROJECTS CONTINUE ACTIVELY IN SABITA

 

Prof. Dr Gurkan Ozturk, Executive of Istanbul Medipol University SABITA, said that there was wane in the number of research areas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the whole world in a short time. Noting that research projects on other topics except coronavirus have come to a halt, Ozturk stated that Medipol SABITA continues to work in different fields in a controlled manner. Stating that they started a research project to diagnose patients with COVID-19 and develop local treatment opportunities in this process, he said that they continued their work in other fields as well.

 

A STRONG INFRASTRUCTURE FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Medipol SABITA includes laboratories equipped with the most advanced technology such as Advanced Microscopy Laboratories, Cell Culture Laboratories, Molecular Biology Laboratories, Brain Research Laboratories, Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratories, Metabolism and Nutrition Laboratories, Electrophysiology Behavior Laboratories, Pharmacognosy and Synthetic Chemistry Laboratories and System Biology Laboratories.

Besides drug development, neuroscience, and brain researches, studies on new treatment approach for cancer, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases are also carried out in these laboratories. In the pandemic, many young researchers cannot draw upon the international circulation and their career development has interrupted says Prof. Dr Hasan Korkaya, Director of Cancer Research Center. Also, Korkaya adds, SABITA is the leading institute and hosts all international graduate students who wish to continue their research projects in our country.

 

SABITA AT THE FRONTLINE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19

 

In the fight against COVID-19, studies on drugs and diagnosis have achieved many important successes in the SABITA. Under the umbrella of SABITA, it has made approx. 100.000 tests in the COVID-19 PCR Diagnosis Laboratory to reduce external dependence and correct deficiencies in genetic research projects. Director of Drug Discovery and Development Center Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Guzel says ‘Cooperation with a pharmaceutical company Atabay Ilac, we have produced the local synthesis of the drugs named ‘Hydroxychloroquine’ and ‘Favipiravir’, the two most commonly used drugs in the treatment of COVID-19, in just 40 days. After getting a license by the Ministry of Health, we carry out all processes of production in our country.’ Developing their original drugs is the milestone psychologically. Also, an innovative cellular therapy project against COVID-19 continues under the umbrella of SABITA.
